Vincentian Academy baseball team settling in
What at first glance appeared like a poor start for the Vincentian Academy baseball team has morphed into a season that is beginning to show some promise.
The Royals lost their three non-section games to open the season from March 23-29, but they won their first two Section 4-A games last week. And Vincentian only figures to improve as the season goes on because it has such a young roster.
"We're playing very well right now, definitely playing our best baseball," coach Eddie Dubis said. "But we've challenged ourselves as well. Our record was 0-3 at the beginning of the year, but we played some really good teams.... We start three freshmen and three sophomores, so we are a young team, so we're getting better every game it seems like."
The freshmen who are starting for the Royals are center fielder Ian Taylor, second baseman David Morganto and pitcher Jay Cortese. Alex Madonna comes off the bench but is another freshman who earns significant playing time.
The sophomore standouts include returning all-section catcher Phil Madonna, left fielder Anthony Smaldino and shortstop/pitcher Greg MacQueen.
"Youth is really carrying us throughout this year," Dubis said. "We're a really young team, but we also have some veterans who have been there the last couple years. We do have five seniors who are big contributors to the team as well."
Dubis was referring to ace pitcher and first baseman Ryan Thompson, pitcher and backup outfielder Ryan Wise, third baseman Peyton Carlucci, right fielder/pitcher Evan Gourley and starting and shortstop Chris Koryak.
