Valley's Zalewski has shot at WPIAL baseball triple crown
Not since 1967 has a Major League Baseball hitter won the Triple Crown.
A WPIAL player may do it this season.
Just like Carl Yastrzemski – the last MLB player to do it – Valley’s Zarley Zalewski doesn’t have a common name. He also has statistics most other players can’t match.
When the Post-Gazette published its first statistics of the season last week (it included games through Sunday, April 22), Zalewski was leading all WPIAL and City League players in the Triple Crown categories – a .676 batting average, seven home runs and 30 RBIs.
Heading into the stretch run of the regular season, Zalewski has a chance to finish atop the three categories, an outstanding feat that would undoubtedly gain the Kent State recruit much attention.
“It would be nice,” said Valley coach Bruce Campana. “He’s had a great season. He deserves the recognition he gets. I wish nothing but the best for the kid.”
