Desperate Valley softball team comes up with extra-inning win
Valley was in need of a win in the worst of ways. It had lost three in a row and five of six and all of a sudden the defending PIAA Class AAA champions were in danger of not even making the WPIAL playoffs.
Traveling to Knoch was not an ideal place to snap the losing streak, it was Knoch who defeated Valley 7-0 on April 13, it was a loss that sent the Vikings into a tailspin. But then a pair of sophomores stepped up.
Kelsey Belitskus helped push the game into extra innings with a bases-loading double that cleared the bases and tied the game and then Jensen York came through with a game-winning double in the eighth inning to lift Valley over Knoch 7-6.
In section 5-AAA Mars (6-2) has clinched a playoff spot while Knoch (4-3) remains in second ahead of Valley (4-4), Kittanning (3-3) and Highlands (3-5). Valley closes out its section schedule on May 1 when it hosts Kittanning.
