Upper St. Clair surprises Bethel Park in big win

Written by Brad Everett on .

Brad Everett recapped the game, Upper St. Clair versus Bethel Park:

2013 0123 USC Conn"As Upper St. Clair coach Danny Holzer emerged from a throng of a few dozen screaming students inside his team's locker room Tuesday night, a reporter asked him if that type of celebration takes place after all of his team's wins.

"Only the big ones," said Holzer, smiling.

This one certainly qualified.

Upper St. Clair pulled even with Class AAAA No. 4 Bethel Park in the race for the Section 4 title by handing the visiting Black Hawks their second defeat of the season, 63-50, in a battle of Route 19 rivals.

"This was a huge win. One of our goals is to the win the section and then maybe the WPIAL, so getting this win really helps us," said Upper St. Clair junior J.J. Conn."

Upper St. Clair's success -- It's all about the basketball team

Written by John Perrotto on .

John Perrotto's feature on the Upper St. Clair boys' basketball team:

2013 0117 USC Grabowski"For Danny Holzer, everything about this season comes back to the team concept.

The Upper St. Clair High School boys basketball coach recently won his 300th career game, but he deflected all the credit.

"It's a great honor but what it really comes down to is having been fortunate enough to be surrounded by a lot of good people," Holzer said. "There have been a lot of good players on our teams, a lot of good coaches on our staff and the administration and parents have always been very supportive.

"It's more of a program achievement than some individual achievement. I'm happy that our program has been able to enjoy so much success."

Upper St. Clair has had plenty of success in recent weeks after a so-so start. The Panthers extended their winning streak to seven games Tuesday night with a 51-50 overtime victory against arch-rival Mt. Lebanon, raising their record to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in Section 4-AAAA. Joel Klein's 3-pointer with five seconds left decided it."
