Upper St. Clair boys' golf team has pefect record

Written by Joe Koch on .

Heading into Thursday's match against Canon-McMillan at Lindenwood Golf Club, the Upper St. Clair boys golf team had a perfect record against overall competition and WPIAL Class AAA, Section 7 teams.

The Panthers are now 12-0 overall and 8-0 in section play after defeating the Big Macs 177-195. Grant Engel led the way with a four-under-par round of 32 that included a penalty stroke. Earlier in the week, Upper St. Clair defeated West Allegheny, 180-197.

Coach Todd Flynn announced the six players he will bring to the individual section qualifier that will be played on Wednesday at Rolling Hills Country Club. His players, all of whom are juniors, will be Engel, who is averaging 35 strokes per nine holes; Thomas Steve (35), Corey Wilding (36), Patrick McDonnell (36), Nelson Zacur (38) and John Wilcox (39).

Right now, Upper St. Clair is in first place by itself for the section lead with Peters Township in second place with one loss. Canon-McMillan has lost to Upper St. Clair, Peters Township and Trinity.

Upper St. Clair meets Peters Township in a rematch on Sept. 27 at Upper St. Clair Country Club, the Panthers' home course. In the earlier match at Rolling Hills, Upper St. Clair won by one stroke, 193-194.

Three days prior to the match with Peters Township, the Panthers take on Trinity, a team that Upper St. Clair defeated in the first match at Upper St. Clair Country Club.

"We're not looking ahead because we haven't won anything." Flynn said. "The golf course is the great equalizer, and we have to take each match one at a time. I know what kind of team we have, and I want the kids to play well. I want them to make the right shots and sink their putts."

Flynn can only do so much for his team, which is the case for all golf coaches. And he feels it in every match.

"Believe me, there's plenty of heartburn going on right now," he said.
