Thomas Jefferson baseball: A look back at the 2012 season

Overall record: 17-6

Section: 11-3 in Class AAA Section 3 (champions)

WPIAL playoffs: Semifinalist (Defeated Hampton, Hopewell; Lost to Blackhawk)

PIAA playoffs: Quarterfinalist (Defeated Warren; Lost to Blackhawk)

This team will be remembered for … Going where no TJ team had ever gone before: the PIAA playoffs. The Jaguars then earned their first PIAA win. Few will forget the two epic, postseason pitching duels between Greg Schneider and Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay.

Key moment: Going 6-1 the second half of section play to win the title in one of the deepest, most-talented sections in the WPIAL. Also notable was a month-long stretch from May 3 to 30 in which the Jaguars surrendered just three runs in six games, the final three being WPIAL playoff contests.

Most valuable player: Schneider. No player in Western Pennsylvania was on Schneider’s level this season. A senior right-hander, Schneider was absolutely dominant on the mound, going 9-2 with a 0.55 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 81 2/3 innings. Offensively, Schneider led the Jaguars in hitting (.521), RBIs (29), runs (29) and home runs (four). He is a Pitt recruit.
