Thomas Jefferson baseball team tries to refocus

Written by Brad Everett on .

A heartbreaking WPIAL semifinal loss now behind them, Greg Schneider and his Thomas Jefferson teammates will try to refocus and earn a trip to the PIAA playoffs when they return to action Wednesday.

Thomas Jefferson (15-5) will square off against Hopewell (18-4) in the WPIAL Class AAA consolation game at Washington & Jefferson College at 4 p.m. The winner moves on to the PIAA playoffs, which begin on Monday, June 4.

The Jaguars, who are the No. 4 seed, are coming off a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss in nine innings against Blackhawk in last Monday’s semifinals. The Cougars scored the game’s lone run on Schneider’s throwing error in the top of the ninth. Schneider had no-hit the Cougars through eight innings.

Hopewell also suffered a one-run loss in the semifinals, falling to Belle Vernon, 9-8. The No. 3 seed Vikings allowed the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.

Both of Thomas Jefferson’s postseason games have ended with 1-0 scores, and the contest against Hopewell also projects to be low-scoring. The Jaguars have allowed only two runs in their past five games. For the season, they have surrendered one run or less 11 times. The Vikings have given up one run or less 10 times. The pitching matchup is expected to be Schneider against Hopewell ace Stefan Mrkonja.
