Thomas Jefferson-Blackhawk baseball quarterfinal figures to be pitchers' duel

Written by Brad Everett on .

Two of Western Pennsylvania’s top pitchers are expected to go head-to-head when No. 4 seed Thomas Jefferson plays No. 1 Blackhawk in WPIAL Class AAA semifinal game today at North Allegheny at 7 p.m.

The showdown between Thomas Jefferson senior Greg Schneider and Blackhawk sophomore Brendan McKay makes this game perhaps the most anticipated of all the semifinal contests.

Schneider has been nothing short of sensational this season. A Pitt recruit, Schneider is the leading candidate to earn Post-Gazette Player of the Year honors. Schneider is 8-0 with a ridiculous 0.16 ERA, as he has surrendered only one earned run in 57 1/3 innings. Schneider has 105 strikeouts, including 17 in a quarterfinal win last Wednesday.

McKay may be younger, but he’s also highly regarded. Earlier this season, MaxPreps named McKay one of the top 50 sophomores in the country. He has not disappointed in putting forth an outstanding season. McKay is 6-1 with a 0.51 ERA and has 95 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings.

Both teams had first-round byes and both played quarterfinal thrillers. Blackhawk (19-2) defeated Chartiers Valley, 1-0. Thomas Jefferson edged Hampton, 1-0, in 11 innings.
