Thomas Jefferson baseball team eyes WPIAL title run

Written by Brad Everett on .

After an excellent regular season, the Thomas Jefferson baseball team is hoping an even more memorable postseason follows.

The Jaguars don’t know exactly who they will open up against in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs – they’ll play the winner of today’s first-round game between Hampton and Mount Pleasant – but they do know they have the talent to continue their season for a few more weeks.

Thomas Jefferson is among the championship favorites in Class AAA. The fourth-seeded Jaguars finished the regular season 14-4 and won the outright Section 3 title with an11-3 record. The Jaguars have lost only one of their past 10 games, that being an 8-4 result against Montour. The Jaguars’ three other losses came by just a single run.

Just as they have since day one, the Jaguars will rely on an excellent pitching staff to extend their season. How good has their pitching been? Well, the Jaguars have held six of their past eight opponents to one run or less. They surrendered only one run in their final three games.

Senior Greg Schneider has been absolutely dominant on the mound and is a strong candidate to win Post-Gazette Player of the Year honors. Schneider, a Pitt recruit, is 8-0 with a ridiculous 0.19 ERA and has struck out 88 in 48 1/3innings.

Offensively, the Jaguars are led by Schneider (.583 average, four home runs, 25 RBIs) and sophomore shortstop Joe McHugh (.481, 22 RBIs).
