Defense has Sto-Rox boys basketball team on cusp of section title

Written by Sports Town on .

If the old adage about defense winning championships is still valid then it's no wonder the Sto-Rox boys' basketball team is well on its way to winning Section 5-AA and is a strong contender for the WPIAL Class AA title.

Sto-Rox is 13-1 overall and 6-0 in Section 5-AA, where it holds a two-game lead over Chartiers-Houston (11-6, 4-2). The Vikings can all but wrap up the section title with a win tonight at Chartiers-Houston, which would be its ninth in a row.

Sto-Rox is allowing just 45.9 points a game, which ranks seventh in the WPIAL behind Eden Christian (41.1), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (43.3), South Fayette (43.7), Beaver Falls (44.9), Brentwood (45.0) and Montour (45.8). Sto-Rox hasn't allowed more than 60 points in a game this season, which came in a 67-60 victory over Northgate on Dec. 28.

Sto-Rox, which is ranked No. 3 in WPIAL Class AA by the Post-Gazette, plays primarily a full-court pressure defense with plenty of trapping that often frustrates the opposition.

Sto-Rox's offense has been inconsistent as the Vikings are averaging 61.5 points a game but senior forward Dontez Ford has been solid as he has a team-high 16.5 scoring average.
