"When practices begin and the season eventually commences, a lot of high school basketball teams are breaking in a crop of inexperienced underclassmen, some of whom haven't yet realized the work ethic needed to play on the varsity level.

And then there are teams such as Steel Valley, whose experience shows almost on a daily basis.

"This is the biggest senior class we've had," Coach Shawn McCallister said.

Steel Valley entered the season with eight seniors, with each one expected to contribute. The group will provide leadership for a team that is coming off a WPIAL playoff appearance after finishing fourth in Class AA Section 3 last season. The Ironmen opened with a 62-42 non-section victory Monday against Class AAA Thomas Jefferson."
