Springdale secures postseason baseball berth

Written by John D'Abruzzo on .

Despite winning just three games in Section 4-A, the Springdale baseball team was still able to lock up a WPIAL playoff spot for the second straight year.

The Dynamos (5-7, 3-5), who lost to Western Beaver last year in the first round after posting an 11-3 record in section play, finished behind Riverview and North Catholic this season in the five-team section.

Springdale secured its postseason berth with a crucial 11-8 extra-inning win over Leechburg on May 2. Senior catcher/pitcher John Kern led the Dynamos with a pair of doubles and senior outfielder Austin Tocco knocked in two runs against the Blue Devils. Kern also pitched five innings and struck out eight batters.

Springdale’s Udanis had a go-ahead three-point play last week

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

Here at Sports Town, we tell the stories of games that we all wish we had seen. For Springdale, one such game happened last Monday night (January 28) while Shady Side Academy was visiting. Springdale won, 44-41.

“In the first half, we were kinda controlling everything,” recalled Springdale head coach Dan Ross. “In the second half, Shady Side made a really nice run. They scored about 21 points in third quarter and pulled ahead …”

It was true – Shady Side had broken Springdale’s early lead. The Indians were up 31-30 and the end of three.

“But Sara Udanis converted a 3 point play that put us up by one, and we never relinquished lead form there,” said Ross. Udanis is a 5’8” junior forward for the Dynamos.

“It’s unfortunate for Shady Side - they did not have the best of free throw nights,” said Ross. He estimated that Shady Side was probably about seven-for-20 from the foul line.
