South Park’s Rigby had summer goal of 50 miles per week before season of 10th place Class AA XC at states
South Park senior Tyler Rigby won the WPIAL Class AA boys’ cross country title and took Class AA 10th place at the state championship yesterday.
Rigby’s ability to compete in the state meet this year was not a “by-chance” result, or the result of a day when everything just goes your way. Rigby competed in the state meet as the result of a very deliberate plan.
“Over the summer, I set a higher goal for peak mileage [than I had set for 2011],” Rigby said. “My peak mileage at end of this past summer was 10 miles more than previous … this year my goal was to get up to 50 miles per week the by the last week of the summer.”
Rigby did not exactly achieve the 50-mile goal, but he was close.
“I actually did not hit 50 miles,” Rigby said. “I got to my last day before [cross country] camp and ran into a light injury due to a new pair of shoes. I ended up getting 42 miles that week, but I was able to progress into camp. My training was still very solid.”
Rigby explained that the injury was actually in his Achilles tendon as he broke in his new shoes. He treated the sore Achilles tendon with rest, ice, and daily stretches. “I toned down a little bit to make sure I didn’t further irritate [my injury],” Rigby said.
As a result, Rigby did not have to miss any cross country time. “Camp started on the 14th [of August] and I did not have a meet until the 28th, which was our second day at school. I was cleared up in time for first scrimmage.”
The rest of the season is, of course, history.
