South Park baseball team learns how to win tight ones
South Park’s ability to find ways to win close games has played a major role in the Eagles qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2006.
The Eagles, who are 15-5 overall and finished second in Class AAA Section 3, have won five of their past six games. The Eagles have won three games by one-run during their current streak, and a total of five times this season. Two of them came last week. Dan Jena hit a walk-off RBI single to lead the Eagles past Montour, 2-1, last Wednesday. Two days later, Nick Yobbi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Eagles to a 5-4 victory against Chartiers Valley.
The Eagles lost five one-run games last season.
“It’s definitely showed the maturity level has grown from last season to this season,” South Park coach Steve Bucci said. “We lost a lot of tough games last year. It’s a maturity process. I’m really proud of the kids and the character they have shown. The guys have really been toughing it out.”
