Background info: Grote has likely been the most valuable player for South Park (15-5), which placed second in Class AAA Section 3. A two-year starter, Grote has played the last few weeks with a painful leg injury (pulled hip flexor), but that has not stopped him from leading the Eagles in hitting, doubles and RBIs while batting in the three hole. Grote has also made an impact as a relief pitcher. He picked up his second win of the season when he pitched the final three innings of a big, 5-4 11-inning victory against Chartiers Valley last Friday. An outstanding athlete, Grote also led the South Park basketball team in scoring this past season.
Coach Steve Bucci said: “He’s done everything we’ve asked. He’s played the outfield, he’s pitched, and he’s a designated hitter now. He’s really been gutting it out. Not a lot of guys that can barely run can do what he’s been doing. The team feeds off that. The guys believe in his leadership. He’s had big hit after big hit for us.”
