South Park’s Carmen made it to states as a runner before becoming a jumper

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

South Park’s Danielle Carmen is slated for WPIAL Championship competition in the high jump, triple jump, long jump, and 1600-meter relay. However, she is a skilled runner and can compete very effectively in the 800- and 1600-meter runs. In fact, Carmen only started high-jumping this school year; Assistant Coach Kristen Hutter had thought the event would allow her to favor her injured knee as it healed.

“We needed points at one meet, they thought they would try me, and it just worked out,” said Carmen. Hutter recalled that Carmen’s early high jump competition took place at Canon-McMillan. The rest is history.

Carmen will attend Robert Morris University on track scholarship next year. She is currently undecided as to what she will study, but she will never forget making it to states her fresman year. She went for the 800, the 1600-meter relay, and the 3200-meter relay.

“I didn’t really know a lot about track -- I never did track before that. Making it to states was a big event,” Carmen said.

As she became acclimated to the triple-jump, Carmen did not go to states her sophomore and junior years.

She will be certainly be competing for the trip tomorrow…
