South Fayette baseball: A look back at the 2012 season

Overall record: 16-8

Section: 12-2 in Class AA Section 1 (champions)

WPIAL playoffs: Semifinalist (Defeated Steel Valley, Laurel; Lost to Ellwood City)

PIAA playoffs: Quarterfinalist (Defeated Mount Union; Lost to Riverside)

This team will be remembered for … Keeping South Fayette among the top programs in Class AA. The Lions qualified for the WPIAL playoffs for the fifth year in a row and won the section title for the third time in four seasons.

Key moment: Showing their fight time and time again, most significantly by the way they hung in the game against Ellwood City in the WPIAL semifinals despite falling behind, 9-0. The Lions went on to lose, 14-11, but had the tying run at the plate in the final inning.

Most valuable player: Mike Fetchet. Lions coach James Barton called Fetchet the team’s best hitter. A junior center fielder, Fetchet had some big games this season. Among his top performances was a 4-for-4 effort against Ellwood City in the WPIAL semifinals and a two-RBI outing against Mount Union in the PIAA first round.
