South Fayette baseball team faces top-seeded Ellwood City

Written by Brad Everett on .

Entering the WPIAL playoffs, No. 4 seed South Fayette knew that if the high seeds won out, the Lions would play No. 1 Ellwood City in the semifinals.

That’s exactly what has happened.

South Fayette (15-6) will take on Ellwood City (19-2) in a Class AA semifinal game today at North Allegheny at 4 p.m. Each of the top four seeds in Class AA are in the semifinals.

Ellwood City is expected to send ace Christian Kerns to the hill. Kerns has been lights out this season, going 9-2 with 81 strikeouts. He pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 in helping the Wolverines defeat Brownsville, 13-0, in five innings in the quarterfinals.

Kerns will likely be opposed by South Fayette’s Zach Walker, who is 7-1 on the season. Walker has not dropped a decision since falling to Chartiers Valley in the season opener. Walker picked up the win in South Fayette’s 5-3 triumph against Steel Valley in the first round. The Lions then beat Laurel, 12-4, in the quarterfinals.

South Fayette has won 11 of its past 12 games, while Ellwood City has won six in a row. The Wolverines have given up 10 runs combined during that streak.
