Upset loss enables South Fayette basetball team to refocus

Written by Brad Everett on .

May 2 was a big day for the South Fayette baseball team, as the Lions won their seventh game in a row and clinched their third section title in four years with an 8-4 win against Freedom.

Two days later, South Fayette played what coach James Barton called one of the most disappointing games he had ever coached when the Lions were hammered by Quaker Valley, 10-0.

“After we won that Freedom game, I think those kids decided the season was already over,” said Barton, who has guided the Lions to the playoffs in each of his five seasons. “We went over there and took a butt whooping. I take responsibility for that, too. After that I had a long talk with the boys and had some choice words for them.”

The Lions must have gotten the message. Following the loss, the Lions finished Class AA Section 1 play with an 11-1 win against Northgate and an 8-0 triumph at Carlynton.

The Lions, who are 13-6 overall, should be seeded fairly high when the brackets are announced later this week, and Barton likes his team’s chances of making a run.

“I like where we are at right now,” Barton said. “I think we’re ready for the playoffs.”
