South Allegheny High School is in the midst of its best school year for varsity athletics.
Three Gladiators squads qualified for postseason play during the fall.
The football team qualified for the WPIAL Class AA playoffs for the first time in 19 years.
The girls soccer team claimed its first section title in school history and advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals.
The boys soccer team also qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.
Meanwhile, a fourth South Allegheny athletic team has been earning accolades during the winter.
It’s been a decade since South Allegheny last qualified for the WPIAL boys’ basketball playoffs, but the Gladiators could get there this season.
South Allegheny has rebounded from a winless season in which it went 0-21 and finds itself tied for fourth place – thus the final playoff spot – in Class AA Section 3. The Gladiators have not advanced to the postseason since the 2002-03 season.
While their record isn’t all that impressive – 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the section – the Gladiators are tied with Shady Side Academy and Riverview. Those teams trail Greensburg Central Catholic, Jeannette and Serra Catholic, all of whom are projected to make the playoffs.
