Shaler girl running with a fast crowd in cross country

Cara De Carlo's feature on Shaler cross country's  Brianna Schwartz:

"With one mile left to go in the girls varsity race at Saturday's Red, White, and Blue Classic, Shaler Area's Brianna Schwartz was running in the pack of leaders.

As the rain fell, Schwartz pounded the trail alongside North Hills' Mary Malone, Hampton's Gina Alm and the Mt. Lebanon twosome of Jillian Hunsberger and Julie Kocjancic.

Schwartz decided it was time to make a move.

"I just took the lead and increased it from there," she said.

The rest, as it is so often said, was history -- Schwartz won the race. She recorded a smoking-fast time of 18 minutes and 7 seconds".
