Shaler baseball team emerges from tough section to qualify for playoffs
In what is generally considered the toughest and deepest section in WPIAL Class AAAA, Shaler is one of the last teams standing.
The Titans (13-7, 7-5) qualified for the WPIAL playoffs by taking third place in the section, placing ahead of quality teams such as Butler and Pine-Richland. The Rams have four WPIAL titles in the past eight years and the Golden Tornado was a WPIAL semifinalist last season.
Senior Matt Bernick was Shaler's top pitcher this season, going 4-2 with 45 strikeouts.
The No. 10 seed Titans open up WPIAL Class AAAA tournament play with a game against Central Catholic (15-4-1) 4:30 p.m. today at CCAC Boyce. The No. 7 Vikings have won seven consecutive games and tied for the Section 4-AAAA title.
Central Catholic features junior outfielder M.P. Buckley, who had eight home runs and 40 RBIs during the regular season. The team's top pitcher is senior Dan Smith, who went 5-1 with 55 strikeouts.
