Shaler girls’ track team speaks through victory

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

Tomorrow, the Shaler team will join Hempfield, Bethel Park, and Norwin in competition for the Championship. Right now Shaler is commonly associated with having an air conditioner crash through a classroom ceiling. But we should note a Titans’ score against North Allegheny.

On April 16 at Shaler, the Titans’ girls beat North Allegheny 94-56. This matters because North Allegheny is a formidable common opponent between Shaler and Bethel Park. The Bethel Park team was only able to beat North Allegheny by 15.4 points last Wednesday in the team semi-finals.

Shaler beat North Allegheny in a mixture of events. These included the 4x800-meter relay, the high hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 1600-meter run, the 4x100-meter relay, the 300-hurdles, the 800, the 200, the 3200, and the 4x400-meter relay. Shaler also won first places in the discus, high jump, and long jump.

For a just a little more comparison, we can mention a couple of Baldwin Invite results. Shaler’s Rebecca Wakeley came in fifth in the same 3200-meter race in which Bethel Park’s Hillary Boxheimer came in second, roughly 19 seconds ahead. Shaler’s Meagan Carter finished eighth in the 800-meter run that day (Bethel Park finished third and fourth).

The point is, Shaler’s distance core will be extra motivated to beat Bethel Park’s tomorrow. And if Shaler’s distance runners can’t beat Bethel Park’s, the Titans’ sprinting and field events appear able to make a difference.

It remains to be seen how Shaler will do against Norwin and Hempfield, but it will be interesting to pit the Titans’ against these two teams in field events.
