Nicola retires as Shaler boys volleyball coach; replaced by Stadelman

Jim Nicola has retired from teaching and coaching at Shaler High School after 32 years.

"I enjoyed my time at Shaler, but it's time to turn the reigns over to somebody younger than me," Nicola said.

Paul Stadelman has taken over as the Titans' head boys volleyball coach after spending the past eight seasons as an assistant to Nicola.

"I'm glad to see the district picked a coach who had been with the program before," Nicola said. "I expect him to do a fine job."

Nicola has agreed to volunteer when Stadelman needs any help.

"I attended the North Allegheny Tournament and watched," Nicola said. "It was much different being a fan."

Shaler is off to an 0-3 start in Section 3-AAA, but Stadelman still has hopes of a playoff berth.

"Our goal for this season is to make a playoff appearance," Stadelman said. "I see our team improving each game and you can't ask for much more than that as a coach of a younger team. We are working hard and trying to make all that work pay off."
