Even without title, another remarkable season for Shaler boys basketball team

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Over the past two seasons, the Shaler boys basketball team went 47-6. That included a remarkable 41-3 record in the regular season. The fact the postseason mark of 6-3 was not as impressive is of little concern to coach Paul Holzshu.

He'll put up the accomplishments of these Titans against any in the school's history. That includes some in the early '90s that included future NBA player Danny Fortson.

"These seniors have played 50-some odd games," Holzshu said. "We haven't won a championship, and obviously we're not going to win a championship. We won our section. But in the history of Shaler Area basketball, when people sit around over a cold beer and talk about great teams, this team will be talked about. It was better than the Fortson teams."

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Titans' past two years are the two outright Section 3-AAA titles. The section has long subjectively been known as one of the best around. But these past two seasons, it'd be difficult to argue with the objective analysis of the postseason performance of its teams. This season was the first time five teams from one section advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals. Also, three of the four semifinalists were from Section 3-AAAA (a fourth, Seneca Valley, lost in overtime to eventual champion Gateway). Last season, three of the quarterfinalists were from the section -- and Shaler's only playoff loss was to a section foe.

Shaler had 11-game section winning streaks during each of the past two seasons.
