Shady Side Academy baseball team's season not over despite semifinal loss

Written by Chris Adamski on .

For only the second time in the past 18 games, for only the second time in the past 59 days, for only the second time all season to a WPIAL team, Shady Side Academy lost a baseball game Monday night.

But the 2-1 defeat to defending WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion Riverside in the semifinals at the Burkett Complex in Robinson does not mean the end of the Indians' season. As one of the top four finishers in the WPIAL, Shady Side Academy was awarded a PIAA playoff berth.

The Indians will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed from the WPIAL in the PIAA tournament, pending the result of the Riverside-Ellwood City WPIAL title game next week. If Ellwood City wins, Shady Side Academy will be the fourth selection from the WPIAL and will open up against the District 10 champion June 4 at a site and time to be determined. If Riverside wins its second consecutive WPIAL title next week, Shady Side Academy will be the PIAA's third choice from the WPIAL and will play the District 6 champions June 4 at a site and time to be determined.

Indians ace Ben Hartz allowed only three hits in the semifinal defeat. Shady Side Academy has given up only seven runs in its past five games.
