Shady Side Academy a PIAA silver medalist in boys tennis again

Written by Chris Adamski on .

For the second time in the past three seasons, Shady Side Academy lost in the PIAA Class AAA boys tennis championship match. But the Indians aren't going to let that fact tarnish making it to among the final two Class AAA teams in the state twice in that time.

The WPIAL champion Indians continued their undefeated season with victories against DuBois last Tuesday, Unionville Friday in the quarterfinals at the Hershey Racquet Club and Erie Cathedral Prep Saturday in Hershey in the semifinals. But the "perfect" season ended with a 4-1 loss to defending champion Conestoga in the title match this past Saturday night in Hershey.

"To be WPIAL champs, especially for such a little school... yeah, it's great. It's an amazing accomplishment," Indians co-head coach Jeff Miller said. "We were 21-1, and   last year we lost in the championship for the WPIAL, and this year we won it. two years ago, we also won it. That's a pretty amazing run for the last three years."

The Shady Side Academy lineup consisted of senior Vivek Nimgaonkar (first singles),  his junior brother Alok Nimgaonkar at second singles, sophomore Chris Grubbs (third singles), freshman Eric Grubbs and senior Aaron Budd (first doubles) and sophomore Henry Cohen and senior Naveen Menon (second doubles).

Three Indians players are heading back to Hershey this weekend. Vivek Nimgaonkar will play in the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament; Alok Nimgaonkar and Chris Grubbs qualified for the PIAA doubles tournament.
