Shady Side Academy baseball team faces defending champion in semifinals
To achieve its WPIAL championship goals, Shady Side Academy must go through the defending champion.
The No. 2 seed Indians (17-2) face No. 3 Riverside (17-5) in a WPIAL Class AA baseball semifinal 4 p.m. today at the Burkett Complex in Robinson.
The Panthers are the defending WPIAL and PIAA champions and have a 10-game postseason winning streak. They have won 10 of their past 11, including a thrilling four-run seventh inning in coming back to beat Deer Lakes in a quarterfinal this past Wednesday.
Shady Side Academy has won seven consecutive games and 16 of 17. The Indians have allowed a total of 10 runs over their past seven games, a testament to starting pitchers Ben Hartz and Andrew Geisler. Hartz is expected to get the start today.
The championship game will be at a time to be determined on either May 29 or 30 at Consol Energy Park. Both teams have already qualified for the PIAA tournament that will begin the following week.
