Shady Side Academy boys tennis team back in final
The Shady Side Academy boys tennis team got a measure of revenge for losing last season's WPIAL Class AAA boys tennis championship match to Mt. Lebanon when it beat the Blue Devils, 4-1, in a non-section match in April of this season. But the true rematch they want to win will occur today.
The undefeated and No. 1 seed Indians will face No. 2 Mt. Lebanon 2 p.m. at North Allegheny with the WPIAL championship at stake.
"I think that they are really ready for a rematch considering we beat them earlier and they beat us last season in the championship," Shady Side Academy coach Tom Mercer said.
The Indians did not lose a set in beating Upper St. Clair, 5-0, in a semifinal Thursday at Keystone Oaks. They are 14-1 in individual matches this postseason.
"I think we're paying better now than we were the first time we played (Mt. Lebanon)," Mercer said. "This team has got a lot of seniors in all the right spots."
Mt. Lebanon defeated North Allegheny, 3-2, in the other semifinal Thursday played at Sewickley Academy. The Section 2-AAA Tigers completed their season. The Tigers won at first singles and second doubles (Eric Huang and Connor Goodman).
