Shady Side Academy girls lacrosse team survives huge scare

Written by Joe Koch on .

There is a tendency to have somewhat of a letdown when a team plays against ranked opponents in three successive games and then meets an unranked opponent.

That's the situation that faced the Shady Side Academy Indians, which slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 following  heartbreaking 14-13 overtime loss to No. 1 Peters Township High. The loss completed a three-game series against ranked opponents which saw the Indians fall twice to Peters Township (17-10 on April 19) and defeat No. 4 Mt. Lebanon, 12-10, on April 24.

On Friday, Shady Side Academy hosted Fox Chapel Area in a non-section game. The Foxes have had a difficult season, but they always get motivated when they play a neighborhood rival. That's especially true in this case as the two schools are less than three miles apart.

For the second time this season, the Indians gave up more than 15 goals in a game, escaping with a 17-16 victory over Fox Chapel. Shady Side, which has four games remaining, improved to 8-2. The Indians' remaining games are against unranked teams that all have losing records.

Fox Chapel, which slipped to 2-10, has played eight ranked opponents this season. In three of those losses, the Foxes have lost by three or fewer goals. Among their four opponents, they face No. 7 Quaker Valley. In an earlier game, the Foxes fell to the Quakers, 7-5.
