Sewickley Academy's WPIAL girls' tennis doubles champions fall in state quarters
Sewickley Academy juniors Jappman Monga and Amy Cheng were starting for the Panthers for the first time this season, and took advantage by joining up to win the WPIAL doubles tournament in October.
That victory qualified them for the state tournament, where the pair fell in the quarterfinals.
Monga and Cheng started the tournament against District 4 runner-up Kim Levy and Anna Newcomer of Loyalsock. The Panther pair won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to move on to face Scranton Prep’s Kendra Croker and Grace Reilly. The District 2 champions took down Cheng and Monga 6-1, 6-0, to end the possibility that Sewickley could have a doubles state champion team in back-to-back seasons.
Last season, Sewickley’s Logan Antill and Caroline Ross won the PIAA Class AA state title in their senior years.
