Sewickley Academy girls' soccer team falls in WPIAL final

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Sewickley Academy went to the WPIAL Class A final looking for gold, not a moral victory, but there can be something taken away from their performance on Saturday.

The No. 2 Panthers (20-1-1) fell short against top seed Greensburg Central Catholic, 2-0, but it became just the second WPIAL Class A team to hold the Centurions to two goals. Springdale also held the high-scoring machine that is Greensburg Central Catholic to two goals.

The Centurions had scored 18 goals in three playoff games before Saturday but the Panthers were able to shut out Greensburg Central in the first half. Frannie Crouse, one of the greatest goal scorers in WPIAL history, was finally able to get Greensburg Central on the board with two quick second-half strikes.

Sewickley Academy enters the PIAA playoffs where it will play District 5 champion Conemaugh Township at Somerset High School today at 5 p.m.
