Sewickley Academy field hockey team takes Shady Side Academy to the limit

Written by Joe Koch on .

In two games this season against Shady Side Academy, the Sewickley Academy Panthers had absorbed two one-sided defeats against the Indians. But under abysmal conditions on Tuesday night at the WPIAL Class AA Field Hockey Championships at North Allegheny High School's Newman Stadium, the Panthers gave as much as they got before falling by a 2-1 margin in overtime.

"We play as a unit," said Sewickley Academy coach Cheryl Ann Lassen, whose team advanced to the championship game on the strength of a 2-1 overtime victory over The Ellis School in the semifinals.

"That was key for our success this season," she added. "But I think all of the teams (in Class AA) are pretty even. We're becoming more even and more balanced."

Senior midfielder Alexis Bosilovic tied the game for the Panthers with 23:40 left in regulation with an unassisted goal. Just more than 10 minutes later, she was awarded a penalty stroke.

With Bosilovic standing just seven yards away from the Shady Side goal, Indians goalie Gabby Harchelroad was able to flick the ball aside and preserve a 1-1 tie.

Lassen said Bosilovic will be greatly dismissed by the Indians.

"She learned how to play as a freshman, and she's just accelerated," the coach said. "She has unbelievable stick skills, athleticism, knowledge and heart and soul."
