Sewickley Academy doubles team adances to PIAA boys tennis semifinals
Last weekend, Will Kleeman and Patrick Dellinger were in the PIAA Class AA team tennis semifinals at the Hershey Racquet Club with their Sewickley Academy teammates. This weekend, the two are back in Hershey -- and back in the PIAA semifinals.
A pair of juniors, Kleeman and Dellinger avenged their team's loss to Wyommissing in the team semifinals this past Saturday by defeating Wyomissing's Alex Altman and Jack Davis in the first round, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3. The Panthers duo then defeated Isaac Eck and Logan Aurand of Juniata in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1.
They will play Sam Borowsky and Max Blumenthal of Harriton 9 a.m. today in the semifinals. The title match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Of the other eight singles players or doubles teams from the North area who advanced to the PIAA championships, only the Shady Side Academy doubles team of junior Alok Nimgaonkar and sophomore Chris Grubbs won a first-round match. Nimgaonkar and Grubbs beat Wissahickon's Ricardo Prince and Claire Uhle, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 6-3 -- but lost to Alex Brzozowski and Mario Nicolia (12) of Erie Cathedral Prep, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
Butler's Will Nesbitt and Shady Side Academy's Vivek Nimgaonkar (Alok's brother) each were eliminated in his first match in the Class AAA singles tournament. Sewickley Academy's Colin Kaye and Grayson Geller both lost first-round Class AA singles tournament matches, while Charlie Wilson and Garrett Powell of Quaker Valley fell in the first round of the Class AA doubles tournament.
The Fox Chapel duo of Ben Short and Dylan McCullough lost, 6-4, 7-5, to Parkland's Igor Ivanov and Richard Lichtenwalner in the first round of the Class AAA doubles tournament.
