Sewickley Academy boys tennis team doesn't let semifinal loss ruin season
A semifinal loss to eventual champion Wyomissing in the PIAA Class AA team tennis semifinals isn't going to take away from what Sewickley Academy accomplished this season.
The Panthers won the WPIAL championship for the ninth consecutive season and won first-round (5-0 against Somerset Tuesday) and quarterfinal (5-0 against Westmont Hilltop Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club) PIAA matches before losing, 4-1, Saturday to a Wyomissing team that would win the PIAA title later on that day in Hershey.
"We all had fun and we drew close as a team," junior doubles player Patrick Dellinger said. "We won WPIALs... we had a lot of successes. Yes, we would have liked to have won (PIAAs), but you know what, we're looking forward to coming back next year and doing even better."
The Panthers' starters were junior Colin Kaye at first singles, senior Grayson Geller at second singles, junior Will Kleeman at third singles, Dellinger and sophomore Luke Vith at first doubles and junior Hayden Moyer and sophomore Logan Yee at second singles.
Kaye and Geller -- who met for the WPIAL Class AA singles tournament championship last month -- will head back to Hershey this weekend for the PIAA singles tournament. The duo of Kleeman and Dellinger will go as a doubles team.
