Haines, DiNardo leaders for young Sewickley Academy baseball team

The Sewickley Academy baseball team's roster is relatively young, particularly when it comes to pitching. But the Panthers have senior outfielder Andrew DiNardo and junior catcher Evan Haines to help out when it comes to leadership, coach Mike Jamison says.

Haines typically hits fifth in the Panthers' batting order, and Jamison noted how Haines playing summer and fall league helped him adjust to the new bats in use this season.

But as good as Haines is with the bat, it's in handling the pitching staff that makes him so valuable to Sewickley Academy.

"He's kind of stepped up and is helping run the pitching staff," Jamison said. "He helps a lot in the bullpens; if he sees stuff go awry out there he'll help adjust, which helps take a little pressure off us (coaches) so we can deal with other stuff in practice. We tend to trust him with our pitching staff a lot more than we've trusted anyone else the last couple years."

DiNardo began his varsity career as a third baseman and spent time at catcher before being moved to center field this season.

"We just lost a lot of our outfield after last year, so we've got three seniors in the outfield this year," Jamison said. "They've all hit the ball well, and they've all got good arms to pay in the outfield. It's nice when you have guys leaving that you can kind of replace them with seniors who also play well, and Andrew has done that."
