The Panthers started their quest for that second championship in the past decade well Tuesday.

Sewickley defeated District 5 champion Windber, 5-0, at North Allegheny High School, in the first round of the PIAA Class AA tournament.

The Panthers will now take on District 4 champion Lewisburg at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Hershey Racquet Club in the state quarterfinals.

Snyder looking for more from Sewickley Academy boys' tennis team

Sewickley Academy coach Whitney Snyder isn’t concerned with how many consecutive WPIAL titles his team has won.

His goal is for his players to be playing their best at the end of the season.

“Our focus isn’t on a getting a certain number [of titles],” Snyder said. “Are we better at the end of the year? That’s what our focus is.”

Sewickley tennis players state their case

Ryan Riordan's feature on Sewickley tennis:

"When the Class AA Section 3 singles bracket was posted this high school tennis season, what stuck out the most was a name that wasn't listed.

Sewickley Academy's Colin Kaye won the 2012 WPIAL Class AA singles championship as a junior, but the Panthers' section singles participants this season were Patrick Dellinger and Logan Yee.

It turns out that Dellinger, who won the WPIAL doubles title with Will Kleeman last season, told Kaye that he wished to play in the singles tournament. Kaye was fine playing doubles with Kleeman, especially since Kaye and Kleeman will be a favorite at the PIAA tournament later this month."
