Despite loss in playoffs, Rebels' softball season is worth a yell

"In four seasons under coach Jay Krull, the Seton-LaSalle softball team has transformed itself from a middle-of-the-road team to the team to beat in the section.

Although the Rebels have been "the team to beat" in Class AA Section 1, that is not to say that any section rival has actually beaten them. Seton-LaSalle, a program that had not won a section title since 1999, has now won three in a row and maintains a 27-game winning streak in Section 1.

The Rebels finished 12-1 overall during the regular season, including a perfect 10-0 record in Section 1. They received the No. 4 seed in the WPIAL playoffs but were upset by No. 13 Beaver Area, 10-3, Tuesday in the first round."

Playoff-bound Rebels still harbor volleyball section title hope

It's six for six for coach Mark Felbinger and the Seton-LaSalle boys volleyball team.

"I took over in 2008, the third year of the program," Felbinger said. "The team did not have a winning record the first two years. Since then we've qualified for the playoffs all six years, and finished either first or second in the section every year. We're very proud of that."

After defeating Trinity, 3-2, Tuesday, Seton-LaSalle has a 6-2 record in Class AA Section 3, which is good enough for second place and another WPIAL playoff berth. The only team ahead of the Rebels is Keystone Oaks. The Golden Eagles are 7-1, but were shocked by last-place Steel Valley, 3-0, Tuesday.

"The race for the section title is closer than it looks," Felbinger said. "If we can win our last three matches and get a little help from Thomas Jefferson, we could win the section title outright."

"It takes 10 sticks to score a goal," said Yates, who took over when previous coach Josh Kurtz resigned in mid-February to take an out-of-state job. "We preach to our players to be team players and to work on team goals."

Ten is the number of players -- including the goalie -- who take the field for a boys high school lacrosse game."
