Serra's History
Serra Catholic High School was founded on September 5th, 1961, with an initial freshman enrollment of 88 boys. It is named for the Blessed Junipero Serra who worked tirelessly as a missionary in Mexico and California and founded 22 mission churches.
The Diocese of Pittsburgh awarded the administration of the school to the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor of the Province of the Immaculate Conception in New York City, who for nearly 40 years lived and taught Juniper Serra’s motto, “Amor a Dios,” – Love God. In 2000, the administration of the school was turned over to the Franciscan Third Order Regular of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since 2004, the school has been under lay administration.
Serra Catholic High School continues to be inspired by Blessed Junipero Serra’s personal philosophy of life, “siempre adelante, nunca atrás!” which means “always forward, never backward!”
