Seneca Valley football team running with high-octane offense
The Seneca Valley football team had no problem flexing its offensive muscle last week during the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.
The No. 4-seed Raiders routed No. 13 Hempfield, 50-20, and it was the fourth time this season they were able to score 50-or-more points.
“We’re blessed with a bevy of playmakers,” Seneca Valley coach Don Holl said. “We have a quarterback who can get the ball in the right people’s hands and then we have some guys who run the ball and find a way to score.”
Star running back Forrest Barnes, the school’s all-time leading rusher, paced the Raiders with four touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards. Barnes caught two touchdown receptions from senior quarterback Jordan Brown, who completed 6 of 13 passes for 141 yards.
One of the top passers in the WPIAL this season, Brown has thrown for 1,492 yards and 17 touchdowns in 10 games.
“It’s pretty neat to be able to watch a kid grow as a high school player,” Holl said. “He was just a pup when he got the job as a sophomore and there were some bright spots early on. He had a great junior year and this year he’s become the total package.
“He understands what we’re trying to do offensively and knows our offense inside and out. His knowledge of the game has been a huge advantage for us.”
Seneca Valley advances to the quarterfinals and will meet No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (8-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny High School. The last time these two teams met was in the 2005 regular season when they both played in the Quad North Conference, and Mt. Lebanon won that contest, 48-20.
