Alumni Update - Kevan Smith (Kannapolis Intimidators)
Kevan Smith went to Pitt on a football scholarship. He left as a professional baseball player after being the Chicago White Sox's seventh-round draft pick last year and receiving a $60,000 signing bonus. The former quarterback and Seneca Valley High School graduate certainly has no regrets about choosing baseball. He has quickly become a catching prospect in the White Sox's farm system.
Smith, 24, is hitting .286 with four home runs and 46 RBIs in 67 games with low Class A Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League this season.
That came after an outstanding debut season last summer in which he hit a combined .355 with nine homers and 48 RBIs in 56 games with the White Sox's two rookie-level farm clubs, Bristol in the Appalachian League and Great Falls in the Pioneer League.
Smith was ranked as the White Sox's 28th-best prospect by Baseball America after last season. The magazine also rated him as the No. 20 prospect in the Appalachian League and the No. 17 prospect in the Pioneer League.
