Top-ranked Seneca Valley boys lacrosse team wins first WPIAL title
Seneca Valley has done little wrong in a magical run that culminated with the Raiders' first WPIAL Division 1 boys lacrosse championship.
Top-ranked by Laxpower.com in Western Pennsylvania for the entire 2012 season, the Raiders got four goals from senior Mike Argyros -- two of them in the third quarter and one in the fourth -- in an 8-5 victory over Shady Side Academy on Friday night at Chartiers Valley High Stadium.
Both teams advance to the PIAA Division 1 playoffs along with Mt. Lebanon, which defeated Pine-Richland, 11-6, in the WPIAL Division 1 consolation game earlier on Friday.
Senior David Hall and and Junior Derek Finney added two goals apiece for the Raiders, who placed third in the WPIAL tournament two years ago and fell in the consolation game a year ago to North Allegheny, just missing a PIAA playoff berth.
Seneca Valley, which enters the PIAA tournament with a 17-1 record, will get a chance to avenge its only loss, a 7-5 setback to Mt. Lebanon on April 20. When the Blue Devils defeated Pine-Richland in the consolation game, it assured them a spot in the PIAA tournament.
The two teams meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny High. The winner of that game meets the winner of another first-round game featuring WPIAL runner-up Shady Side Academy and the winner of a play-in game between District 10 champion Erie Cathedral Prep and District 6 champion State College. That game was played on Saturday.
