Seneca Valley waits through postponement before completing semifinal
The Seneca Valley baseball team waited an entire year for a chance to defend its WPIAL championship at the same Consol Energy Field it won the title on last season. It will have to wait another 24 hours to find out if it will get that chance.
The Raiders' WPIAL Class AAAA semifinal against Central Catholic was suspended due to lightning in the bottom of the third inning with Seneca Valley ahead, 2-0, and the Vikings up with a runner on second, two strikes and two outs.
"It's not about the delay; it's just that, for both teams, it takes the aces out of the game," Seneca Valley coach Eric Semega said. "So you have to revamp, maybe move people around, who you're going to pitch, things like that."
Matt Smith was on the mound for the Raiders, who now will turn to either senior Zach DeTillio or junior Zach Spangler to complete the game.
The game is scheduled to be completed beginning 4 p.m. today at Upper St. Clair -- the same venue as it began Monday.
"It's unfortunate that (the delay) had to occur," Semega said. "Obviously, you don't go into a game trying to maneuver your lineup trying to prepare for that; you're figuring you'll get the game in. It is what it is. We'll have to come back (this afternoon) and go from there."
