Pitching is mind game for Seneca Valley baseball star

Chris Adamski develops the story behind the pitching of the 2012 Seneca Valley baseball team:

"About six years ago when Matt Smith was 12, he sustained a slight separation of his left shoulder when he took a tumble while snowboarding.

"The doctor told me if it was my right shoulder, I would have never been able to throw a baseball again like I could," recalled Smith, now a senior at Seneca Valley High School. "That was it for me and snowboarding. I haven't done it since."

Smart man, Smith.

Extremely smart, in fact. Smith, a right-handed pitcher, is not only the ace of the staff for a Seneca Valley team that played this regular season looking eminently capable of retaining its WPIAL Class AAAA title. He's also ranked No. 1 in his graduating class academically with a GPA of better than 4.7.

That helped earn him a scholarship to Georgetown University, where he plans on majoring in business finance. Oh, that whole being a dominant pitcher thing helped with the scholarship money offered, too."
