Turned out to be an in-season banquet for Riverside boys' soccer team

Because of scheduling conflicts, the Riverside post-season boys’ soccer banquet had to be rescheduled.

Coach Ben Huth warned that moving it forward could be a challenge because of the state playoffs and he turned out to be a prophet. Riverside’s post-season banquet turned out to be an in-season banquet last Thursday.

At that point, the Panthers were riding an 11-game winning streak and, although the season ended two nights later in the PIAA Class A Quarterfinals, it was still a season worthy of celebration.

“It’s a disappointment to lose at the end of the season,” Huth said. “But it’s still a huge deal to get as far as we did. You look back at what we did and we had a lot of huge wins back to back and beat some really good teams.

“At the beginning of the year, I knew we had a lot of good pieces, coming together was the key. I knew we had the potential.”

The Panthers started out losing their first two games and, after 11 games, had just a 6-4-1 record. The next 11 games, though, were all wins.

“I think we all saw it when we lost to Sewickley Academy in overtime to start the second half of the season. We lost 2-1 in overtime but our team knew we were one of only three teams to score on them.

“I knew and our guys knew we could compete.”

They did compete all the way to the PIAA quarterfinals, the best season in school history.
