Riverside boys' soccer team wins first PIAA playoff game

It wasn’t quite territory that no Riverside player had gone before since the Panthers’ baseball program is the most dominant in the state, but it was new territory for the school's boys' soccer team.

And it proved to be adequately comfortable as the Panthers prevailed 2-1 in a shootout win over Brockway in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs. It was the first time Riverside had participate in the state soccer tournament.

For a few minutes, Riverside did have the unusual experience of being behind but Anthony Meneice tied the game at 1-1, making that experience short-lived. The game remained through two overtimes but Austin Ridgely, who had the game-winning goal in the WPIAL championship game against Greensburg Central Catholic, ended the game with a goal in the shootout.

The win improved Riverside’s record to 17-4-1 but also marked the last of the Panthers’ 11-game winning streak.

In the PIAA Class A quarterfinals, Riverside fell to Sewickley Academy 2-0. As it ended up, section foe Sewickley Academy handed Riverside three of its five losses.
