Riverside becomes first public school to win WPIAL Class A boys' soccer title
Before Riverside lined up against Greensburg Central Catholic on Saturday at Baldwin High School, no public school had won a WPIAL Class A title. That record no longer stands, thanks to a 2-1 double-overtime win for the Panthers that ended with an Austin Ridgely free kick.
That Riverside made it to the final was far from a sure thing as the Panthers entered the playoffs as the 10th seed and it was the first year in goal for Kyle Robertson. Robertson made 17 saves in the win.
For the Panthers, it was also revenge against the team that eliminated them from the postseason last year. Both years, Riverside was 12-4-1 in the regular season but, last year, the Panthers lost 2-0 to Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.
“That was fun, we enjoyed the moment,” said Riverside coach Ben Huth. “Everyone was down on the field, getting their pictures with the trophy.”
