Riverside baseball team a step away from return to PIAA title game
Riverside is just a win today away from a return to the PIAA Class AA championship game after a pair of powerful wins this past week.
The defending PIAA Class AA champions used a home run by Rob Hardy to defeat Brookville 6-3 on Monday and a home run by Tyler Falk Thursday to defeat South Fayette 5-4.
Hardy was also the winning pitcher in the first game while Blaise McCarty recorded the victory over South Fayette. That trio plus Devin Kelosky are the only letter winners returning from last year but, despite the inexperience, the Panthers have already matched their win total of a year ago as they improved to 20-6 with the South Fayette win.
Today, the Panthers have a relatively short trip to Shaler’s Jerry Matulevic Field while North Star must travel from Somerset County. The Cougars, though, have already travelled this direction as they came to Butler’s Pullman Park and defeated WPIAL Champion Ellwood City 2-0 last Monday. Junior left-hander Brantley Rice limited the Wolverines to three singles in that win and it would seem to be his turn in the rotation again while Hardy’s turn would be up for the Panthers.
