Riverside softball team ace Wilson gains national attention

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

A former first baseman, Riverside junior pitcher Kirsten Wilson was recently named one of the ESPN High School Softball Players of the Week for the week ending April 19.

One high school softball player is chosen by ESPN from each region of the country. Wilson was the East representative.

ESPN cited her 6-0 record on the mound with 84 strikeouts at that point in the season while also mentioning her .667 batting average. Through 12 games Wilson had 131 strikeouts, second-best in the WPIAL.

Her individual game performances are hard to believe. She pitched a one-hitter while striking out 15 and hitting a home run and adding five RBIs in a 10- win over Freedom. In the second meeting against Freedom Wilson improved somehow, tossing a no-hitter and striking out nine while going 3 for 3 at the plate. Wilson struck out 19 against Laurel this season.
