Strong pitching gives Riverside baseball team hope of defending titles

Written by Sports Town on .

Graduation hit defending WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion Riverside hard, taking seven starters, but the Panthers have retooled quickly, thanks to a sterling pitching staff.

Entering Monday’s action, Riverside was 7-3 overall and 4-0 in Section 5-AA. In those four section wins, the Panthers have allowed a total of just one run. Last week, Riverside recorded a pair of shutouts – 3-0 over South Side and 9-0 over Laurel, a WPIAL semifinalist last year.

Rob Hardy pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine, in the South Side win and then had three hits in the shutout of Laurel. Hardy is one of Riverside’s returning starters.

Blaise McCarty recorded the Laurel shutout, striking out four and allowing four hits.
